Synthesis of Perfluorinated Acrylate and Methacrylate Fouling-Release
Polymers
Ship-hull protection from fouling organisms is essential for efficient
Fleet operation, energy conservation, clean/re-coat costs.
Ineffective fouling control results in increased fuel consumption,
reduced speeds, and elevated dry-dock expenses.
Current Navy and commercial fouling-control coatings contain
toxics (tin, copper, biocides/pesticides) that are
potential pollution sources and are increasingly
regulated, which may impede normal Fleet operations.
The technical approach for this project was to develop non-toxic, long-life,
easy-fouling-release coatings for ship-hull fouling control
and other applications in fouling environments. The approach
taken was to:
- Design and optimize experiments to characterize surfaces that exhibit
fouling release properties;
- Maximize consistency and reproducibility in formulation,
application, exposure, and testing;
- Correlate surface characterization data with coating performance
data by developing predictors to design an optimum fouling
release surface, and investigate properties of
the bioadhesive - polymer coating interface; and
- Demonstrate critical coating contributions and determine
impact on easy-fouling-release performance: (low surface
energy,
coating flexibility,
surface homogeneity and structure,
and sidechain orientation)
